This Month’s Topic: Building Independence FROM Your Business
The beginning of a new month brings a new topic to explore. This month’s topic – “Building Independence FROM Your Business”– is valuable when building a sustainable, scalable business. We will explore what independence FROM your business means and tips to achieve it.
Develop Freedom FROM Your Business by Developing Your Expertise
In today’s competitive business environment, having expertise that sets you apart from your competitors is a huge advantage. It benefits you when you are launching and growing your business and when you are ready to develop freedom FROM your business. In the first post on gaining freedom FROM your business, we explored what independence FROM your business means. This article offers Tip #1 to help you gain FREEDOM from your business. Being an expert in your field is one way to do just that. Not only does expertise make you more marketable, but it also gives you a sense of confidence and authority. It positions you as an influencer. In this article, I will share insight into becoming an expert in your industry, how to showcase your expertise, and how these position you for freedom FROM your business.
Why Does Expertise Matter?
Expertise is essential in your industry for several reasons. First, it sets you apart from the competition. When you have a specialized set of skills and knowledge, you are an asset not only in your business, but in your business’ realm of influence. Expertise allows you to charge higher rates, secure better opportunities, and influence matters that impact your business and your business’ industry.
Another reason expertise matters is it offers you a sense of fulfillment and purpose. When you are passionate about your work and have a deep understanding of your field, it can be incredibly rewarding. It allows you to make a difference in your industry and contribute to the greater good.
What Is Expertise?
Expertise is more than just knowledge. For the purposes of gaining freedom FROM your business, we will define expertise as not only knowledge but also the skill of using/imparting knowledge, experience, effective communication, and outstanding interpersonal skills. Knowledge alone is not enough to gain freedom FROM your business.
To gain freedom and independence FROM your business and have more time with your family, take vacations with less worry, or launch a new endeavor while keeping your current business running smoothly, you will need to:
- Continue to expand your knowledge by learning more about your industry and business.
- Reflect on the experience you have gained, what you have learned along the way, and how that learning can benefit your business.
- Effectively communicate your knowledge, experience, business goals, systems, and day-to-day operations to your employees or independent contractors. They need clear direction and the opportunity to “bring their brains to work” and offer suggestions and insights that benefit the business.
- Master the challenge of interpersonal skill development. It is easier to learn the theory and practice interpersonal skills in a calm learning environment than to demonstrate your proficiency when faced with a difficult, highly emotional situation.
